Several artists have recorded tribute albums to Monk, among them Carmen McRae ( Carmen Sings Monk) and Monk's son, jazz drummer T. There are various theories about why this happened, but it seems likely that he suffered from physical and mental illness, which may have been misdiagnosed, leading to improper medication that only made the problem worse. In the last decade of his life, Monk performed very rarely, and withdrew into isolation. Monk's solo piano work from his years at Columbia is collected on Monk Alone: Complete Columbia Solo Recordings 1962-1968 he was also recording albums as the leader of a combo, including Underground, Criss-Cross, and Monk's Dream, which was the best-selling album of his career. That brought more visibility, and in 1963, Monk became one of only a few jazz musicians to make the cover of Time magazine. They were a larger label, able to spend more money promoting his albums, and his sales increased accordingly. Monk recorded primarily for Columbia Records in the 1960s. Other highlights from Monk's 1950s recordings are found on The Best of Thelonious Monk on Prestige and Riverside. This group recorded relatively little – Monk and Coltrane were signed to different record labels – but they can be heard on Thelonious Monk with John Coltrane. In 1955, Monk spent six months leading a quartet that featured John Coltrane on tenor saxophone. The title tune from his 1956 album Brilliant Corners was so challenging that after more than 20 takes, Monk stil hadn't gotten a performance that was satisfactory all the way through, and the final recorded version was edited together from multiple takes. That reputation wasn't entirely unfair some of Monk's music was difficult even for him and his band. His music still wasn't selling very well, though, and it had the reputation of being too difficult for the mainstream jazz audience. By the mid-1950s, Monk was well respected by his fellow musicians.
His work from this period can be heard on Complete 1947-1952 Recordings. In the late 1940s, Monk was recording for Blue Note. His early style was rooted in stride piano, but as bebop developed in the 1940s, Monk became a key figure in its growth, incorporating its faster pace, complex rhythms, and harmonic innovation into his own playing. Monk grew up in Manhattan, and began to find work in New York jazz clubs while still in his late teens.
Among his compositions are such jazz standards as "'Round Midnight," "In Walked Bud," "Straight, No Chaser," and "Well, You Needn't." Monk is one of the most frequently recorded jazz composers, even though he only wrote about 70 pieces during his career.
On October 10, 1917, the jazz pianist and composer Thelonious Monk was born.
